APIA, SAMOA — The Scientific Research Organisation of Samoa (SROS) concluded a successful two-day specialized Career Day event on 23–24 September 2026, bringing together researchers, science professionals, and visiting students to explore pathways in applied science and technology.

The interactive two-day event provided high school and tertiary students direct engagement with local scientists, highlighting how scientific innovation directly supports Samoa’s national development, food security, and environmental sustainability.

Highlights Across Key Divisions

Staff members across SROS’s primary divisions delivered technical presentations, interactive demonstrations, and guided displays to give students a firsthand look at day-to-day scientific careers:

• Agricultural Research Division (ARD): Researchers showcased ongoing projects aimed at enhancing crop resilience, improving soil health, and combatting local pests and diseases to strengthen Samoa’s agricultural sector.

• Product & Innovation Development Division (PIDD): Demonstrations featured prototype development and value-added processing, transforming local raw agricultural materials into market-ready products like local flours, oils, and bio-based items.

• Production & Business Development Division (PBDD): Staff highlighted the commercialization pathway, demonstrating how scientific research transitions from laboratory benchwork into viable business ventures, local manufacturing, and export-ready commodities.

• Environment & Renewable Energy Division (ERED): Presentations focused on sustainable energy solutions, bioenergy research, and environmental monitoring to tackle climate change impacts facing Pacific island communities.

Empowering Samoa’s Future Workforce

Throughout the two-day showcase, students participated in Q&A sessions & career mapping talks. SROS scientists shared their academic journeys, entry requirements for scientific fields, and the critical role research plays in building a resilient Samoa.

By bridging classroom learning with real-world scientific applications, the event aimed to inspire Samoa’s youth to pursue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) pathways and consider high-impact careers in research and development.
