Our history

founding & early years –

establishing the organisation

The Scientific Research Organisation of Samoa (SROS) was established in 2006 by the Government of Samoa—initially as the Research and Development Institute of Samoa—under specific legislative acts designed to anchor the nation’s future in science and innovation. Formed as an independent statutory body, SROS was created with a clear mandate to drive economic development and environmental resilience by adding high-value processing to local agricultural resources, fostering public-private partnerships, and pioneering practical, technology-driven solutions for local industries and communities.

2006

Expansion & growth –

achieving significant milestones

Since its inception, the Scientific Research Organisation of Samoa (SROS) has achieved transformative milestones by bridging the gap between traditional local resources and advanced scientific innovation. From pioneering value-added agricultural breakthroughs—such as gluten-free breadfruit flour, coconut-derived biodiesel, and climate-resilient crop technologies—to expanding its state-of-the-art facilities with the launch of the Biodiscovery Centre, SROS has continually driven national economic and environmental resilience. By providing critical public health support during global crises and establishing vital environmental baselines, the organization has cemented its role as a premier national hub for research, turning indigenous potential into lasting, life-changing solutions for Samoa.

2010

the challenges & reforms –

Organization Restructuring

To accommodate its expanding national responsibilities—such as specialized environmental monitoring, advanced biodiscovery, and regulatory testing like narcotics and environmental impact assessments—the Scientific Research Organisation of Samoa (SROS) strategically integrated new divisions and specialized units into its framework. By building upon its core divisions (Food Science and Technology, Environment and Renewable Energy, Plant and Postharvest Technologies, and Technical Services) with dedicated units like molecular research and advanced product innovation facilities, SROS expanded its technical capacity. This structural evolution allowed the organisation to transition from basic agricultural processing into high-tech scientific investigations, modern biotechnology, and rigorous compliance testing to better serve Samoa’s evolving economic and environmental needs.

2014

Innovation for the people –

SROS at present

At present, the Scientific Research Organisation of Samoa (SROS) operates through a refined organizational structure designed to maximize research efficacy and directly support national strategic plans. Governed by its Board of Directors and led by executive management, the organisation is structured into specialized divisions—including the Agriculture Research Division, Environment & Renewable Energy Division, Product Innovation Division, and the Biodiscovery and Molecular Research Division. This modern framework allows SROS to streamline its capabilities across crop improvement, targeted molecular analysis, advanced product prototyping, and environmental monitoring, ensuring the institution remains agile in addressing Samoa’s contemporary economic, environmental, and food security priorities.
