The 2024 FAO SIDS Solutions Forum, held from 5-8 November in Fiji, brought together leaders and innovators from the Pacific region to discuss transformative solutions for agrifood systems. The Scientific Research Organisation of Samoa (SROS) actively participated, contributing to discussions on the theme of “Building the Blue Pacific Continent through Production and a Better Environment.”
Highlighting Samoa’s Cocoa at the One Country, One Priority Product (OCOP) Session
On Day 2, Dr. Pousui Fiame Leo, CEO of SROS, delivered an impactful presentation on Samoa’s cocoa industry as part of the One Country, One Priority Product (OCOP) initiative. His presentation, titled “Realizing the Potential of Cocoa in Samoa,” emphasized the rich potential of Samoan cocoa, from its quality and unique flavor profile to its prospects for driving economic growth and sustainable agricultural practices. The discussion highlighted how Samoa’s cocoa industry can contribute to building a resilient and competitive agrifood system, supporting both local livelihoods and broader economic development.
Sustainable Transformation of Domestic Agrifood Systems (STODAS) Project
The STODAS Project, an initiative involving Fiji, Solomon Islands, and Samoa, was another focal point of the Forum. This project aims to empower Pacific agribusinesses through sustainable practices, strengthen domestic food security, and drive rural economic development. A key feature of the STODAS Project is the Agribusiness Incubation Centre in Samoa, established to foster local agribusiness entrepreneurship, drive innovation, and create opportunities for youth and women.
Celebrating Innovation through the Pacific Agri-Innovate Business Competition
A highlight of the Forum was the Pacific Agri-Innovate Business Competition, where three top agribusinesses from each participating country – Samoa, Fiji, and Solomon Islands – competed under the Agribusiness Incubation Solution initiative. The nine winners were recognized for their innovative contributions to sustainable agrifood systems and each received a cash prize of $1,000 USD. These businesses exemplify the commitment to sustainable transformation in the agrifood sector across the Pacific region.

Through active engagement in the FAO SIDS Solutions Forum, Samoa reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable agricultural development, innovation, and environmental. The collaboration among Pacific nations is set to strengthen resilience in the region, with projects like OCOP and STODAS leading the way toward a brighter, more sustainable future.
